After Birmingham’s 13-2 victory in the last round of the FA Futsal cup, they welcomed Hull Futsal Club who had shocked everyone to reach the round of 16 phase of the competition after they beat Atletico Birmingham Futsal club 8-6. However on the day Birmingham were too strong for Hull as they cruised to a 14-2 victory.
Birmingham started well with Dan Guy opening the scoring after the Hull keeper fumbled the ball. But Hull straight away equalised when Danny Clarke controlled the ball well from a throw and slotted it in. It took Birmingham about 5 minutes to retake the lead when Joel Flix smashed the ball into the top corner superbly. Birmingham really did take control of the half after Albiol’s well placed shot found the net to make it 3-1 and then Waladbaigi struck after a great headed lay-off from Alex Garcia to end the half at 4-1.
Birmingham started the second half like they started the first with Dan Guy grabbing his second and third goals of the match within a minute of each other to make it 6-1. Birmingham was rampant in the second half as Mulekezi grabbed the 7th, Guy impressively grabbed his 4th of the match and Zak Price made it 9-1. However they were not done and the goals from Birmingham kept flying in with Withers finishing well from a corner, Tijerin grabbed the 11th. An unselfish pass from Withers to Gomez made it 12. Hull did score again through Chris Henderson but Gomez grabbed the 13th for Birmingham and Garcia struck a 10 metre penalty to make it 14-2 and send Birmingham through to the quarter finals of the FA Futsal Cup.
Thomas Mulekezi spoke to me about the clubs cup aspirations and he said, “Realistically this is our best opportunity at a trophy so were gonna go for it for the remainder of the season.” They will now have to wait until the 7th of May to find out who they will face in the Quarter Finals. Birmingham’s next scheduled fixture is a Midlands derby at home against Loughborough in the FA Super League.
Below is an interview with Birmingham head coach Mohammed Maghrbi after the match.
